The Flower Sconce is a sculptural reflection on the balance between vitality and fragility, inspired by coral forms- a metaphor for nature’s delicate equilibrium and a quiet warning of imbalance. Sculpted entirely by hand, its coral-like form begins as a plywood armature veneered on the reverse in zebrawood - a private accent only for the owner. A hand-formed steel mesh and recycled-paper fill establish support, and layers of plaster tape and plaster mud are applied. Refined through multiple sanding stages and carved using files and dental tools to capture the forms subtle geometry, it’s lastly varnished for a wet look.
The warm walnut base, composed of rescued cut offs, was laminated together using small individual pieces once the plaster stabilized and was drawn and carved to wrap completely around the lower form before being finished and oiled.
Functionally, three integrated vessels are formed directly into the plaster body, allowing the piece to function as both sculpture and living vessel. When hosting floral arrangements, it merges organic life with crafted form. Conceptually, the work reflects a world in fragile equilibrium - a dialogue between nature and object, a work that renews itself with each arrangement and celebrates combining beauty and utility.
